Ken Eklund on Magic

Starting strong with a Peabody Award-winning game designer who invites us to ‘Play it before you live it’.

Our first Ludogogy podcast guest is Ken Eklund! Ken is a designer of serious games tackling issues such as climate change, community resilience and water quality. These are most often in the Alternate Reality genre and inspire players to make shared stories which represent ‘emergent collective wisdom’. If that whets your appetite, then you may be disappointed that another characteristic of a Ken Eklund game is that you can no longer play it. They are finite events, which inevitably end. But the collective wisdom can still be accessed – as you will find if you search ‘World Without Oil’.

The archive of the artefacts created by players of World Without Oil can be found through the Wayback Machine and you can also find Ken’s article for Ludogogy from 2020 on our website.

  1. Loved this conversation – Ken’s work always offers new insights and inspirations over time! I could have listened to the bobcat fable for an hour, btw…
